Palladium is a soft, silvery-white metal with a platinum-like appearance. It has the lowest density and lowest melting point as compared to any metal in the platinum group. The most common use of palladium is in the field of the production of catalytic converters for the automotive industry so as to reduce emissions. Palladium is also used in jewelry, dentistry, watchmaking, blood glucose test strips, aircraft spark plugs, surgical devices, and electrical contacts.
When palladium is finely ground and dispersed, such as by way of example palladium on charcoal, it becomes a versatile catalyst that accelerates heterogeneous catalytic processes such as hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and oil cracking.
